Way To Zanskar




    The best way to reach Zanskar is via the Srinagar-Kargil-Padum route. The other route is from Manali-Leh Highway to reach Leh, followed by Leh to Kargil-Padum route. If you are arriving from Manali, travel to Zanskar Valley via Leh-Kargil route

                                                How to reach Zanskar Valley?

You can reach this destination by air, train, and road. If you opt for flight, you need to reach the Kushok Bakula Airport, which is the closest airport to Leh. Then, hire a taxi to get to Zanskar Valley afterwards. If you opt for the train, you will after reaching the Jammu Tawi railway station, take a taxi that will take you to Leh and then to Zanskar Valley.

The distance between Leh and Zanskar Valley is around 462 km, which will take around 11 hours if one takes the NH 1 and NH 301. After reaching Leh, one can opt for a hired vehicle to take you to Zanskar Valley via Kargil.

The nearest Airport is Leh Airport 465 Km from Kargil, and via Srinagar Airport it is 460 Km .

 

By Train

Nearest Railway Railway Station is Jammu Tawi Railway Station in Jammu i.e 720 KM .

 

By Road

From Kargil To Zanskar it is 250 KM. From leh around 460 KM.

Monastery In Zanskar

  Sani Gonpa :-  7kms before reaching Padum this castle like monastery which unlike other monasteries of Ladakh, is built on level ground. According to a legend its origin is associated with Kanishka ( Kushan ruler of 2 nd  century AD), on account of the Kanishka Stupa, which stands in the backyard of the walled complex. Karsha Gompa :-  9 kms from Padum this is the largest monastic establishment in Zanskar. The complex of white washed structures are imposing and can be seen from Padum. This complex houses 150 monks, eight temples, two assembly halls, valuable icons, artifacts, scrolls and thankas. The monastery was founded during th 14 th  century. Stongde Monastery:-   18 kms from Padum the monestry is perched atop a hillock overlooking the village.
