Climate in Zanskar

Summer Season (March till June, Temperature -2°C to 30°C)

Even though this is the summer season, most of the roads are closed in Zanskar during this time.

 The roads are closed & inaccessible, so are the guesthouses. It is only in June that the snow 

starts to clear & Zanskar starts receiving tourists.

Monsoon Season (July to September, Temperature 10°C to 25°C)

Even though this is called the monsoon season, Zanskar receives very little rains because of its high 

altitude & because of the rain shadow effect. The snow more or less melts away during this time,

offering lovely sightseeing opportunities in places like Suru Valley.

Winter Season (October to February, Temperature -2°C to -25°C)

From November to December, and also late October, Zanskar is cut off from the rest of the country. 

It is not advisable to plan a trip to Zanskar during this time. The Kargil-Padum route also remains

closed during winters.

  Sani Gonpa :-  7kms before reaching Padum this castle like monastery which unlike other monasteries of Ladakh, is built on level ground. According to a legend its origin is associated with Kanishka ( Kushan ruler of 2 nd  century AD), on account of the Kanishka Stupa, which stands in the backyard of the walled complex.   Zanskar Valley, once known as the kingdom of Zanskar, is a sub-district (tehsil) in Kargil district of Jammu & Kashmir state. About 240 km from Kargil and located at an altitude of 3670 Mtrs, Padum is the administrative headquarters of Zanskar valley. In ancient times, Padum was used to be one of the two capitals of the kingdom of Zanskar, other being Zangla, which also houses a palace too. Padum village serves as the base for the tourist visiting Zanskar valley.It offers a decent range of restaurants to eat, and private hotels or budget guest houses/home stays for overnight stay. There is a very decent government tourist bungalow too for the stay that charges about Rs 600-700 per night.
